Bakers End Strike In Delta
THE protest embarked upon by members of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, Delta State chapter, ended on Sunday, even as cost of bread remained high.
Members of the association commenced the strike last Monday to protest against the recent hike in the prices of baking materials.
The state Chairman of the group, Mr. Kelly Orien, who spoke to our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday, explained that the strike was to sensitise customers that its members were introducing new price template in the market.
He explained that the 50kg bag of flour, which they previously purchased for N9,500 “now sells for between N11,000 and N12,000 per bag, while sugar, which previously sold for N8,000, now sells for N11,000.”
He added, “We went on strike to enable us to effect the new price template for bread. This is the only way we can sensitise our customers that prices of materials have gone up. If we do not go on strike, it will be difficult to deal with our buyers. We are now back in business.”
